Take a Deep Breath

Recently I have been using Headspace, which is a meditating app you can download for free, and it uses Mindfulness- Based Stress Reduction techniques to settle the mind. Whether you are anxious, or stressed, or depressed, or your mind feels scrambled with a ton of various emotions, or you are going through some difficult changes, this is an excellent way in being more zen about life in general.

Headspace includes programs that target anything you want to feel more at ease with, incorporating fun animations and the rich hypnotic male voice that stimulates tingles, flooding through your whole body. It is as simple as closing your eyes and paying attention to the rising and falling of your breath, feeling the points of contact, feeling the space around you, concentrating on the weight of the body (determining whether it feels heavy or light on the surface you are laying/sitting on) and allowing any environmental sounds to come and go. The point is diverting the mind from wandering excessively, it is acceptable to let the mind wander but in a controlled manner. That way we are at harmony with our thoughts or any concerns that we may have, also it is being able to accept our thoughts like observing cars passing by in traffic, in a way that doesn't fixate the mind so much that it becomes heavily distracted. Allowing thoughts to come and go enables us to move forward. Let the mind drift for a bit and then let it return to the rhythm of the breath. Don't forget to pause and notice how you feel once you have opened your eyes at the end.
